The fact the guide is attached along the side.
My old mandoline (another company's) fell apart one day and the very next day saw this one advertised. Decided to get one and give it a try. I love the fact that the guide is attached to the base. My only complaint would be that the last little piece never gets sliced--need to use a knife to finish ...

So disappointed, and unhappy.
A year ago, I asked for a mandoline for Christmas, so my daughter bought me the Starfrit Pro Mandoline. I tried using it soon after Christmas, to shred cabbage, but after a short time, I gave up and did it with my old grater, by hand. The mandoline did not seem to want to cut the cabbage, and it ...

Small Jobs Can Be Handled, but NOT much more
Reviewed at
starfrit.comMandoline not made for course vegetables, as difficult to grade cabbage, leaves get stuck between slide & base, & than you end up having to chop up a 1/4 of the cabbage by hand. Slicing works great. Very sharp so caution is required. Unfortunately I've now used it otherwise I would return it to invest in a better quality mandoline which can handle grading & slicing lettuce.

A year ago, I asked for a mandoline for Christmas, so my daughter bought me the Starfrit Pro Mandoline. I tried using it soon after Christmas, to shred cabbage, but after a short time, I gave up and did it with my old grater, by hand. The mandoline did not seem to want to cut the cabbage, and it left huge chunks, and it was hard to get the slider to move over the blade properly. The grater also did not work well. I have tried the thing from time to time since, for different veggies, always giving up in frustration. It is far easier to just chop things manually. I am so disappointed in this product, I would not recommend it to anyone, and I am sorry I did not take it back as soon as I had tried it once, but unfortunately I did not, and now I am stuck with something that is useless. I would not even give it to a thrift store.
Does the job
I bought this to replace one I had to retire. Not much use so far. What I have tried has been fine. This mandolin does the job and the guide does make it very safe
